Based in Stuttgart, the new venture will be with Japanese concerns GS Yuasa International and Mitsubishi Corporation, with the objective of developing the “next generation of high-performance lithium-ion batteries.”
The focus of development will be on plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. Operations are planned to start in the beginning of 2014, subject to approval by regulatory authorities. Bosch will be the dominant partner in the venture, with a 50% stake with GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi Corporation each holding 25%.
The companies aim to use advanced cell management and progress in electrochemistry and materials to significantly increase energy content. This will reduce weight and space requirements, and increase the range of electric vehicles.
