It’s a small step but hopefully a significant one: ITM Power has won a bid from the UK government’s Homes and Communities Agency to operate a hydrogen mini grid system (HMGS) in the town of Rotherham, near Sheffield.

The HMGS is an existing facility comprising an electrolyser fed by a 325kW wind turbine, supplying a storage unit that holds up to 200kg of hydrogen, plus a dispensing unit.

In addition, a 30kW fuel cell system provides power backup for buildings close by. ITM plans to upgrade the installation to become what it describes as a “showcase” for its latest equipment, which will supply hydrogen fuel to the greater Sheffield area. The company also says it will use the HMGS as a basis to develop its commercial model for hydrogen generation systems, power-to-gas and refueling solutions.

The facility is situated close to the M1 motorway and two major population centres, which ITM hopes will make it an ideal place to demonstrate the economic viability of a hydrogen refuelling station.
