Mesa del Sol unveils Japanese-funded Smart Grid

Located in the southern part of Albuquerque, Mesa del Sol has been planned as a “visionary” community, and now has its own Smart Grid. The newly installed microgrid uses on-site solar, fuel cell, natural gas and back-up battery storage, including 80 kW fuel cells from Fuji Electric.

The Japanese New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) is investing $22 million in the smart grid system and will monitor and test it for the next two years, until March 2014. The development runs alongside the PNM Prosperity Energy Storage Project – itself billed as the US’s first solar storage facility to be fully integrated into a utility’s power grid.
