Speakers representing some of the world’s most important energy storage purchasers are set to gather at the Energy Storage USA 2015 conference in a fortnight.

Scheduled to appear at the event are utility heavyweights of the stature of Southern California Edison (SCE), Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), NextEra Energy Resources, E.ON and Burbank Water and Power.

The line-up promises to give attendees unparalleled access to decision makers in charge of energy storage selection, said Jack Ahearne, head of strategy and development for Energy Storage Update.

“The timing of this event is highly significant for those seeking to commercialise energy storage in the USA,” he said.

“Energy storage is now a real focus for government bodies such as the DoE and major institutional investors from around the world. Any company serious about developing energy storage in the US will want to make sure they attend.”

Commercialising energy storage

Efforts to commercialise energy storage in the US were given a boost this month when news broke that the government had attracted USD$4bn in renewable energy funding from private-sector backers.

The cash, double an original estimate of $2bn, includes $500m from University of California’s Office of the Chief Investment Officer, $350m from the New Zealand Superannuation Fund and $200m from the Alaska Permanent Fund.

The private sector commitment is directed at unconventional assets such as energy storage, fuel cells and microgrid projects.

Interest in the Energy Storage USA 2015 event has soared following the funding announcement, Ahearne confirmed.

“We have seen a surge in registrations over the last week,” he said. “Recent additions to the delegate list include attendees from Sempra Energy, Panasonic, Xcel Energy, PG&E and Grid Energy, amongst others.”

Critical energy storage topics

The two-day Energy Storage USA 2015 event will cover a number of critical commercialisation topics, including:

  • Lessons learned from recent requests for offers in California, with feedback from SCE and PG&E on the state’s energy storage procurement process following Assembly Bill 2514.
  • Energy storage project development and financing, featuring contributions from the US Department of Energy and the Export-Import Bank of the United States, among others.
  • Comparing a range of different energy storage technologies on cost and performance, led by E.ON, Alstom and Abengoa.
  • Energy storage application value and performance, with input from utilities such as SCE and NextEra Energy Resources.
  • Innovative energy storage applications unveiled by S&C Electric Company.
  • Energy storage product requirements according to GE Energy Storage.

Additional sessions will focus on battery technologies for grid applications, energy storage growth in states outside of California, new markets for generation-connected storage and sustainability in data centres.

The event kicks off on Tuesday July 7 at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley, San Diego, California.
