We all know of the importance of energy storage. But it is nice to have that view reinforced by the kinds of companies responsible for advising on major infrastructure projects across Europe, such as Intertek, whose Energy & Water Consultancy business development manager George Smith confirms energy storage is one of the great unsolved problems of the power system across Europe.

“It is a bit of an issue at the moment,” he tells Energy Storage Report. “I am convinced it is being seriously looked at but I don’t think it has been solved yet.”

He adds that current European utility attention is focused on interconnectors as a way of trading excess energy around the continent, and that there needs to be a grid-scale alternative to pumped hydro “because you cannot have hydro schemes everywhere.”

The good news, though, is this situation currently represents a big opportunity for the energy storage industry. “Whoever solves energy storage will be a millionaire,” Smith opines. We know, and we are working on it…
